OEM and Private Label: Building Your Own Brand
What OEM and private label actually mean, which one suits your stage, and what a factory needs from you to start.

Most buyers use OEM and private label interchangeably. Factories do not, and the difference decides how much control you have and how much the first order costs.
Private label is the faster route
You take a product the factory already makes and put your brand on it. Artwork, packaging, sometimes a colour. The tooling exists, so minimum quantities are lower and the first production run is quick.
It suits a brand testing a market, extending a range, or getting to shelf before a season.
OEM is your product, made to your design
You bring the design or specification and the factory builds to it. That can mean new tooling, new moulds, and a longer development cycle with samples going back and forth.
It costs more up front and takes longer. In return you get a product a competitor cannot simply order from the same catalogue.
What a factory needs before quoting
The single biggest cause of a slow start is an incomplete brief. Send:
- The reference product, as a photo, a link or a physical sample
- Your target market and where it will be sold
- Quantity for the first order and your expectation after that
- Artwork in a print ready format, with the dimensions you want it on
- Any certification or labelling your market requires
Plan packaging as part of the product
Packaging is where private label orders lose time. Print colour on a screen is not print colour on a box, and a design that works on a flat file may not wrap the shape you have chosen. Ask for a physical packaging sample before the full run, and sign it off in writing.
Protect the basics
Register your brand in the market you sell in. Keep your artwork files. Be clear in writing about who owns the tooling if you paid for it. These are small steps at the start and difficult conversations later.
Send us the reference product and your target market, and we will review which factories can produce it under your own label.
Have a product or a shipment to move?
Send the product, the quantity and your delivery city. We will come back with the practical route.
